A Preliminary Design Review (PDR) is conducted to ensure new technologies are mature enough to be integrated into a product subsystem to form its allocated baseline. Remember, design critiques aren’t brainstorming sessions or usability tests. They’re a method for designers to get specific, actionable feedback from stakeholders about prototypes, wireframes, and other deliverables, so they can give constructive feedback and find the perfect design solution.
SRR Items Reviewed
A successful CDR is predicated upon a determination that the detailed design satisfies the Capabilities Development Document (CDD). Multiple CDRs may be held for key Configuration Items (CI) and/or at each subsystem level, culminating in a system-level CDR. Critiques are really valuable if you’re running them at regular intervals and inviting people to share work at all stages of the design process of the product lifecycle.

A design critique panel is made up of a handful of designers, developers, analysts, or other key stakeholders. A critique group should include 5-7 other team members (designers, developers, copywriters, product managers, etc.) and relevant business stakeholders. The primary responsibility of the critiquers is to provide feedback on the design while following the rules and to help improve the presented solution. This is different from a project review, which covers not only technicalities, but also budget, resources, availability, and scheduling.
