A few years ago, a website named the Urbana grove one of the best places to see cherry blossoms in the United States. The cherry trees nestled within the Arboretum are an extension of the gardens at Japan House at the University of Illinois. And so our mission is really about sharing traditional Japanese arts under that umbrella, but also about sharing the four principles of Tea, which are harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. Japan House aims to make the beauty of traditional Japanese arts and culture accessible to everyone. The University had selected a site within the relatively new Arboretum for Japan House.

When our family has made special trips in years past to see the cherry tree blossoms, the pink-and-white flowers never disappoint. The calm, peaceful atmosphere isn’t lost even on typically rambunctious children, who might enjoy taking photos amongst the trees and around the pond (but no standing in garden beds, climbing trees, or throwing rocks). Bier was friends with Professor Shozo Sato, the Director of the original Japan House located at 902 West California, Urbana. When Sato retired, Professor Kimiko Gunji took over as the new Director. The original Japan House was torn down and an initiative to build a permanent structure within the Arboretum began where Gunji could teach Chado, Japanese tea ceremony. This gave Bier the idea of designing the Tea Garden for the Japan House.

Some boards can take years to cure—an unreasonable amount of time for most clients to wait. So for the last forty years we have accumulated lumber to become our own lumber yard. We have on hand two acres covered with lumber decks, about 250,000 board feet of many species sawn to our specifications and cured to proper moisture content.
