He struggled to find the right setting for the classes, sometimes even teaching them from his own home. Eventually, after several years, Morton Weir, then Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, now Chancellor Emeritus, heard of the rising popularity of these tea ceremonies. He arranged for Professor Sato to be able to use an old Victorian house on campus, at Lincoln Avenue and California (now the site of the Alice B. Campbell Alumni Center). Japan House has been a cornerstone of UIUC’s campus since it was founded in the 1960s. These dedicated leaders of Japan House made their dreams a reality when they launched the new Japanese arts and aesthetics (ARTJ) minor, which opened for student enrollment in fall of 2022.

He directs his volunteers with patience and delegates duties for them to complete. He involved himself in painting, woodworking, carvings, fine arts and music. Bier loved music so much that he considered going to college to study music and to continue his training in piano. In college, however, he decided to work toward an undergraduate degree in geology. He absorbed his studies wholeheartedly and enjoyed every moment of it.

What are examples of classes students can take?

We offer tea ceremonies, an art form going back hundreds of years in Japan. It is the highly ritualized serving of a bowl of tea and a sweet to honored guests. Kimiko Gunji received numerous awards for her teachings as well as her contributions to promote Japanese arts and culture. The very core of this approach, and of Japan House studies is Chado, the Way of Tea. This ancient and revered Japanese practice brings together numerous Japanese arts and traditions.

In 2015, Professor Sato and his wife returned to Champaign where he is still teaching and giving demonstrations. Through his continued support and inspiration are we able to celebrate both the legacy and the future of Japan House. Sato was the founding director of Japan House, a Japanese cultural center serving the University of Illinois, where he is Professor Emeritus. He was granted a Ph.D. from Towson University in 1997 and a D.F.A. from the University of Illinois in 1998. Japan House aims to make the beauty of traditional Japanese art and aesthetics accessible to everyone.

With the Illinois app, you can get the information you need, when you need it, all at your fingertips. Whether it’s finding your way to class, finding a wonderful place to eat, or starting a study group, the Illinois app has you what you're looking for. It requires a lot of time, even with a well equipped shop and its highly skilled people. Our houses start at $400 per square foot and can go up from there if the client wants. The bigger the house, the less can be spent per square foot within a given budget.

Born in Japan in 1933, Sato holds a degree in Fine Arts from Bunka Gakuin College, Tokyo. Sato was officially adopted into the Kabuki family of Nakamura Kenzaburo XVII, and given the name Nakamura, Kanzo IV. Sato is a master of the highest order of Chado, Japanese Tea Ceremony, Ikebana (flower arranging) and Sumi-e (black ink painting). Through cultural courses and seminars, community outreach programs, and international visiting artists, Japan House builds bridges and generates connections that unite us in our collective humanity. While all Democrats voted in favor of aid to Ukraine and all but Ms. Tlaib supported funding to Taiwan, 37 left-leaning Democrats defected to vote against the Israel aid bill.

What is a typical project timeline? ⌄

The traditional architectural forms found in Japan are essentially pure structure which is meticulously joined using complex, interlocking joinery. This carpentry is so precise it doesn’t need to be covered up with moldings and trim. So, we almost never test-assemble anything—the joinery is so tight pieces would be damaged in trying to take them apart once assembled.

There are e-metered parking spaces in Lot F-31, which is north of Japan House (at St. Mary's Road and Lincoln Avenue) and Lot F-32 to the south of Japan House (on Lincoln Avenue across from the Vet Med complex). The nearest bus stops are about a 2-3 minute walk from Japan House. For more information on public transportation options, please click here. It is only with the dedication, determination, support and vision of Kimiko Gunji that Japan House exists, and is able to exist in the future!

How has participating in the Japanese Arts and Aesthetics minor helped you grow in your other areas of study?

East Wind (Higashi Kaze), Inc. designs and builds traditional Japanese architecture, adapted to meet western architectural expectations. Since 1976, we have worked with clients and contractors to build houses, interiors and other structures throughout California and the rest of the world. Sydney Nielsen, junior in LAS, has been taking classes at Japan House since fall of 2021. She did the house’s internship program this past fall, is in Japan House's minor program and has worked as a course assistant. And like I said, I’ve met some of my favorite people there, and the content I learned there will be useful for what I want to go into in the future, because I’m looking at international business, specifically in Japan.

We can build a traditional Japanese live-on-the-floor house, which uses half the square footage of a house designed to accommodate furniture. We can build a wing or the core of a house—usually places where you will hang out, spend a lot of time. The rest of the house can then be built using cheaper modern construction techniques. One doesn’t necessarily need Japanese laundry rooms, storage rooms or garages. Japanese artist Shozo Sato arrived at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts as an artist-in-residence in 1964, and began teaching tea ceremony.

We offer the following academic classes for University of Illinois credit. Certain course offerings may be offered only once or are limited to fall-only or spring-only. All courses open for registration can be found in the Course Catalog under ARTJ. Our gardeners typically work weekly on Tuesday and Friday mornings and our gardening dates depend on the weather (we do not have any tasks during inclement weather). If you have little to no gardening experience, we suggest volunteering on Friday mornings to do simple tasks like raking and picking up sticks.

The Way of Tea Club students, led by Instructor Ono Riley, showcased their expertise in the tea ceremony by serving each guest a freshly whisked bowl of Matcha green tea alongside delicious sweets. Following the ceremony, as everyone remained gracefully seated in seiza, guests and hosts engaged in a delightful exchange, sharing the motivations behind their work. The students shared their reasons for joining the Way of Tea Club, while Master Monnosuke and Master Komazo recounted their personal journeys into the Kabuki tradition, reflecting on their paths to mastery in the art. Still, 37 “no” votes, while a break from Washington’s ironclad support for the Jewish state, fell short of the opposition bloc progressives had hoped to muster.

The package, which now goes to the Senate, is almost certain to become law. We saw a gap in the literature about Japanese architecture that addressed how it was done, so we decided we needed to write a useful book about the process of designing and building a Japanese house. This is not the way most Americans (or Japanese) want to live today. While the traditional architectural form is without doubt very beautiful, it doesn’t satisfy contemporary expectations of comfort.

The gardens are free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. There are no public restrooms in the Arboretum - please plan accordingly for your visit. For safety reasons, the tea garden with its rocky path is closed during the winter. Japanese gardens are a natural sanctuary for tranquility, not a playground or photography session backdrop - please see our list of garden etiquette and guidelines below. Japan House is a teaching establishment, made up of a Japanese tea rooms, class space, and surrounded by Japanese gardens.

About half of any job is completed in the shop before our materials go to site. The structural and finish elements of each house are pulled from our lumber decks, jointed to make the lumber perfectly straight, flat and square and then milled to precise dimensions. Following that, each piece is allocated to specific locations in the house. All the joinery is drawn out in ink before the joinery is cut out, and the pieces are then hand-planed to silky smoothness, chamfered, wrapped in shrink wrap, and safely stored before going to the site.
